Ingredients
For the Dough
2 1/4 teaspoons (1 packet) active dry yeast
1 cup warm milk (around 110°F)
1/4 cup granulated sugar
4 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
1 large egg
3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, plus extra for dusting
1 teaspoon salt
For the Chocolate Filling
1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
3 tablespoons unsalted butter
2 tablespoons granulated sugar
2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
For the Glaze
1 cup powdered sugar
2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
2-3 tablespoons milk
Instructions
1. Prepare the Dough
1.1 In a small bowl, combine the warm milk and sugar, then stir in the yeast. Allow it to sit for 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
1.2 In a large bowl, combine the butter, egg, flour, and salt. Add the yeast mixture and stir until a dough forms. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until it's smooth and elastic.
1.3 Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours, or until it doubles in size.
2. Prepare the Chocolate Filling
2.1 While the dough is rising, prepare the filling. In a saucepan over low heat, melt the butter and chocolate chips together, stirring until smooth. Remove from heat and stir in the sugar and cocoa powder. Set aside to cool.
3. Assemble the Chocolate Rolls
3.1 Once the dough has doubled in size, punch it down and turn it out onto a floured surface. Roll it into a 15x12-inch rectangle.
3.2 Spread the chocolate filling evenly over the dough, leaving about a 1/2 inch border on the edges.
3.3 Roll the dough tightly from the long edge, pinch the seam to seal, and cut into 12 equal pieces using a sharp knife.
3.4 Place the rolls cut side up in a greased 9x13-inch baking dish. Cover with a clean kitchen towel and let rise again for about 30 minutes, or until nearly doubled in size.
4. Bake the Rolls
4.1 Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
4.2 Bake the rolls in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown.
5. Prepare the Glaze
5.1 While the rolls are baking, prepare the glaze. In a small bowl, combine the powdered sugar, cocoa powder, and milk, adjusting the consistency with more milk or sugar as needed.
6. Glaze and Serve
6.1 Once the rolls are done, remove them from the oven and let them cool slightly before drizzling with the chocolate glaze.
6.2 Serve warm and enjoy the gooey, chocolaty goodness!
